Why meta titles and descriptions matter
Your meta title is the clickable headline that appears in Google search results. It is one of the strongest on-page SEO signals — Google uses it to understand what your page is about, and users read it to decide whether to click. Keeping it between 50 and 60 characters prevents Google from truncating it mid-word.
The meta description does not directly affect rankings, but it has a significant impact on click-through rate. A well-written description of 140 – 160 characters that speaks directly to the searcher's intent will consistently outperform a vague or truncated one. Think of it as a one-line ad for your page.
Google may rewrite your meta description if it thinks its version better matches the search query. Writing a strong description still matters — it serves as the default and sets the tone for pages where Google doesn't override it.
